The President has repeatedly said that the U.S. wants to accumulate Greenland as a matter of “nationwide safety.” Greenland’s positioning between the U.S., Russia, and Europe makes it a robust geopolitical asset, and Trump has argued that Denmark can’t be relied upon to guard the island.
Ulrik Pram Gad, a senior researcher on the Danish Institute for Worldwide Research, tells TIME that “the Greenlandic political system and authorities have truly been very resilient” within the face of the threats.
“They have been sticking to insisting that we are going to assist America deal with its official safety considerations, however we do not need to give away our self willpower and our sovereignty,” he says.
Nonetheless, the subject has repeatedly returned to the forefront of U.S. political dialogue.
